Pioneering the Elimination of Insecticides in Swede Production |
How a product is grown is of the utmost importance to today's retailers and consumers. This is why, since 1998 (a full four years before the banning of organophosphates and carbomates), all Fearns' swede has been grown under insect netting. The mesh protects plants against cabbage root fly and turnip root fly attack without the need for organophosphate sprays. By pioneering in this field and pushing back the boundaries, Fearns has gained a reputation for environmentally friendly farming. We're proud to be leading the way in eliminating the use of chemicals on the land and in our food. As well as reducing pollution and cutting out potential risks to consumers, we've found that farming in this way produces swedes with superior conformation and colour. Combined with the absence of pest damage this means that customers have a consistently appealing product - and we enjoy expanded sales, increased profitability and repeat custom.
